Best Time to Trade Forex: Session Hours & Volatility Guide

When to trade forex for the best spreads and liquidity. Complete breakdown of Sydney, Tokyo, London, and New York sessions plus the best overlaps for each currency pair.

Why timing matters in forex

The forex market is open 24 hours a day, 5 days a week β€” but that doesn’t mean all hours are equal. The right session for your strategy depends on:

  • Which pairs you trade (EUR/USD vs USD/JPY vs AUD/USD have different active hours)
  • Your strategy type (scalping needs liquidity; swing trading doesn’t)
  • Your risk tolerance (volatility peaks during session overlaps)

Trading at the wrong time means wider spreads, slower execution, and lower probability setups. This guide explains exactly when to trade β€” and when to step away.

The four major forex sessions

The FX market follows the sun around the globe. There are four main sessions:

SessionUTC hoursLocal hours (London)Local hours (New York)
Sydney22:00 – 07:0023:00 – 08:0018:00 – 03:00
Tokyo00:00 – 09:0001:00 – 10:0020:00 – 05:00
London08:00 – 17:0009:00 – 18:0004:00 – 13:00
New York13:00 – 22:0014:00 – 23:0009:00 – 18:00

(Daylight saving shifts these by 1 hour twice a year.)

What happens in each session

Sydney session (22:00–07:00 UTC)

  • Pairs that move most: AUD/USD, NZD/USD, AUD/JPY, AUD/NZD
  • Volatility: Low to moderate
  • Spreads: Wider than London/NY but acceptable on majors
  • Best for: Asian-pair specialists, news from Australia + NZ (RBA, RBNZ)

Tokyo session (00:00–09:00 UTC)

  • Pairs that move most: USD/JPY, EUR/JPY, GBP/JPY, AUD/JPY
  • Volatility: Low to moderate, with periodic spikes on BoJ news
  • Spreads: Tighten on JPY pairs, wider on European pairs
  • Best for: JPY-pair specialists, Asian economic data

London session (08:00–17:00 UTC)

  • Pairs that move most: EUR/USD, GBP/USD, EUR/GBP, USD/CHF, gold (XAU/USD)
  • Volatility: Highest single-session volatility on European pairs
  • Spreads: Tightest of the day on majors
  • Best for: EUR/USD and GBP/USD traders, breakout strategies, news traders

London is the most-traded FX session globally β€” approximately 35% of daily turnover happens here.

New York session (13:00–22:00 UTC)

  • Pairs that move most: EUR/USD, GBP/USD, USD/CAD, USD/MXN, indices
  • Volatility: High, especially around US economic releases (NFP, CPI, FOMC)
  • Spreads: Tightest on USD pairs
  • Best for: US-data traders, indices/CFD traders

The session overlaps β€” the highest-quality trading hours

Forex’s highest liquidity and volatility happen when two major sessions are open simultaneously.

London / Tokyo overlap (08:00–09:00 UTC)

  • 1 hour overlap
  • Spreads tightening, volume building
  • Not the highest-volatility window β€” but a great time to prepare for London opens

London / New York overlap (13:00–17:00 UTC)

  • 4 hours overlap β€” the most-traded window of the entire week
  • Roughly 50% of daily forex volume happens here
  • Spreads at their tightest, depth at its deepest
  • Major US economic releases drop in this window (13:30 UTC = 09:30 NY)

If you only have time to trade 4 hours a day, trade this window.

Sydney / Tokyo overlap (00:00–07:00 UTC)

  • 7 hours overlap
  • Lower volume but stable conditions
  • Good for AUD pairs and JPY crosses

When NOT to trade

Friday evening (after 20:00 UTC)

  • Volume falls sharply
  • Spreads widen
  • Weekend gap risk on Monday open

Sunday open (22:00 UTC Sunday)

  • Very thin liquidity for the first 1–2 hours
  • Spreads can be 5–10x normal
  • Skip the first 2 hours of the trading week

During major news releases

  • Don’t enter new trades during high-impact releases unless you have a specific news-trading plan
  • Spreads can spike 5–20x normal
  • Execution slippage can blow through your stop loss

Use our economic calendar to see upcoming high-impact releases.

Public holidays

  • US, UK, EU, and Japan holidays meaningfully reduce volume
  • US holidays especially affect indices + USD pairs

Christmas / New Year week (Dec 24 – Jan 2)

  • Very low liquidity
  • Erratic price action
  • Most professionals are off the desk β€” opportunistic moves possible but high risk

Practical recommendations

If you have 2–4 hours/day: Trade the London/NY overlap (13:00–17:00 UTC). Highest probability window, tightest spreads.

If you’re in Asia and can only trade during your day: Focus on JPY and AUD pairs during the Tokyo session. EUR/USD and GBP/USD typically don’t move much during pure Asian hours.

If you’re in Europe with a day job: Trade the London open (08:00–09:00 UTC) before work β€” most major moves happen in the first 90 minutes.

If you’re in the Americas with a day job: Trade the New York open (13:30–14:30 UTC = 09:30–10:30 ET) β€” coincides with the US cash equity open.
