Scalping Forex: Strategies, Pairs & Best Brokers for Scalpers

Forex scalping means taking dozens of small trades per day, holding for seconds to minutes. Learn the best scalping strategies, pairs, sessions, and brokers.

What is forex scalping?

Forex scalping is a trading style where positions are held for seconds to a few minutes — capturing small price movements (3–10 pips per trade) across dozens of trades per day. The goal: compound many small wins into meaningful daily profit.

Scalping is the most demanding retail trading style. It requires:

  • Lightning-fast execution (broker latency matters)
  • Tight spreads (wide spreads make scalping unprofitable)
  • Strict risk management (small losses compound quickly)
  • High focus for 2–4 hours during liquid sessions
  • A mental disposition that tolerates volume of decisions

Best forex pairs for scalping

Scalpers need the tightest spreads and highest liquidity. Only major pairs qualify:

PairWhy scalpable
EUR/USDTightest spread globally (0.0–0.3 pips raw), deepest liquidity
USD/JPYTight spreads (0.2–0.5 pips raw), consistent intraday movement
GBP/USDWider spreads (0.2–0.6 pips raw) but larger ranges = better R/R
EUR/JPYLiquid cross, scalpable during Tokyo + London overlap

Avoid scalping: exotic pairs (spreads too wide), commodity-linked minors (slower movement), low-volume sessions.

Best times for scalping

The London / New York overlap (13:00–17:00 UTC) is the only session that consistently provides:

  • Tightest spreads of the day
  • Deepest liquidity (low slippage)
  • Reliable directional movement
  • Multiple setups per hour

Secondary windows:

  • London open (08:00–10:00 UTC) — strong directional moves at session open
  • NY open (13:30–15:00 UTC) — US economic data + cash equity open

Avoid: Asian-only session (too slow), Friday afternoon (volume drops), holidays (illiquid).

Three proven scalping strategies

1. EMA-bounce scalp

Setup: 5-minute chart of EUR/USD with 20 EMA and 50 EMA.

Entry rules:

  • Trend confirmed when 20 EMA > 50 EMA (uptrend) or 20 EMA < 50 EMA (downtrend)
  • During uptrend: wait for price to pull back to the 20 EMA, enter long on bullish reversal candle
  • During downtrend: wait for pullback to 20 EMA, enter short on bearish reversal candle
  • Stop: 5–8 pips beyond the EMA
  • Target: 1:1 to 1:2 R/R

Why it works: Trending markets respect dynamic support/resistance levels — the EMA acts as a mean to which price reverts before continuing.

2. London open breakout scalp

Setup: 1-minute chart of EUR/USD or GBP/USD.

Entry rules:

  • Mark the high and low of the 30 minutes before London open (07:30–08:00 UTC)
  • Enter on break of either level
  • Stop: opposite side of the range
  • Target: 1.5× range size or +15 pips, whichever comes first

Why it works: London brings fresh liquidity that often drives sustained directional moves from the open.

3. RSI extreme reversal scalp

Setup: 5-minute chart with RSI(14) indicator.

Entry rules:

  • Wait for RSI to exceed 80 (overbought) or fall below 20 (oversold)
  • Wait for confirmation: a bearish reversal candle (RSI > 80) or bullish reversal candle (RSI < 20)
  • Enter against the extreme
  • Stop: just beyond the recent swing
  • Target: RSI returning to 50 (median)

Why it works: Extreme readings on short timeframes often signal exhaustion of the immediate move.

Required broker characteristics for scalping

Scalping demands specific broker capabilities:

RequirementWhy

Raw/ECN account0.0 pip spreads + commission < total cost of 1-pip standard
No restrictions on EAs / hedging / scalpingSome brokers prohibit fast in-and-out trading
Tier-1 regulationFCA / CySEC / ASIC — avoid offshore-only
Deep liquidityLess slippage during fast moves

Risk management for scalpers

Scalpers’ biggest danger: commission compounding. Trading 20 lots/day at $7 round-turn = $140/day in commission = $2,800/month.

Rules:

  1. Max 0.5% risk per trade (not 1% — more trades = lower per-trade risk)
  2. Daily loss cap: 2% of account
  3. Max 20 trades per session — beyond this, fatigue causes mistakes
  4. Win rate target: 55%+ (lower works only with higher R/R)
  5. Track per-trade commission in your journal

Common scalping mistakes

  1. Scalping on standard accounts — 1+ pip spreads = uncompetitive
  2. Ignoring news events — high-impact releases blow out spreads
  3. Trading too many pairs simultaneously — focus on 1–2 pairs
  4. Increasing position size after wins — death of consistency
  5. Scalping when tired — fatigue impairs split-second decisions

Quick FAQ

Is scalping forex profitable? It can be, but requires the most skill of any trading style. <30% of scalpers achieve consistent profitability vs ~40% of swing traders.

Can I scalp with a $500 account? Mechanically yes (micro lots), economically no — commissions eat any meaningful gain. Scalping needs $5,000+ for the math to work.

Do all brokers allow scalping? No — many offshore brokers ban scalping in their terms. Always verify the broker’s “scalping allowed” policy. All tier-1 brokers we review permit scalping.

What’s the best scalping platform? cTrader is built for fast execution. MT5 beats MT4 for scalping (faster order processing). Avoid web-based proprietary platforms for scalping — too much latency.

Can I scalp during NFP/FOMC? Some pros do — but spreads can balloon from 0.5 pips to 30+ pips during the release. Most scalpers step away from major news.
